BIFMA, USGBC and IWBI Advance Alignment on Furniture Sustainability Across LEED and WELL

ANSI/BIFMA e3 v2024 and LEVEL certification recognized across both LEED v5 and WELL frameworks.

Grand Rapids, MI – The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) today announced a strategic alignment with the U.S. Green Building Council
(USGBC) and the International WELL Building Institute
(IWBI) to advance a more unified approach to sustainable and healthy commercial interiors.

At the core of this alignment are the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard and LEVEL®, BIFMA’s third-party certification program for commercial furniture. Together, these frameworks now play a recognized role across both LEED v5 and WELL programs. The alignment<del cite="mailto:Deisy%20Verdinez" datetime="2026-06-03T09:48">,</del> acknowledges furniture’s influence in the built environment and offers project teams clearer pathways to meet sustainability and wellbeing
    goals.

For teams pursuing green building certification, this alignment delivers immediate, practical value. Within LEED v5
, USGBC’s Building Product Selection & Procurement credit uses a multi-attribute framework to evaluate products across five key criteria areas: human health, climate health, ecosystem health, social health and equity and circular economy outcomes.
LEED v5 guidance specifically recognizes LEVEL, including Tier 4, as a pathway contributing across all five categories. It also references ANSI/BIFMA Standard Method M7.1 and ANSI/BIFMA e3 for low-emitting furniture requirements.

The alignment extends to IWBI's WELL Building Standard (including WELL v2 and the next version of WELL), where the VOC Reduction feature for furniture and furnishings references both ANSI/BIFMA e3 and M7.1 for low-emitting products. WELL’s material transparency pathways for furnishings further elevate priorities central to e3 and LEVEL, including ingredient disclosure, safer chemistry and healthier indoor environments. All of these alignments also provide clear guidelines for products pursuing IWBI’s Works with WELL

    designation.

“Advancing healthier buildings requires progress not just at the building level, but across the entire ecosystem of products that shape indoor environments,” said Jessica Cooper, IWBI Chief Product Officer. “Achieving
greater alignment across all industry standards is critical to this process, as it gives building professionals and manufacturers the clarity and confidence to implement best practices at scale.”

“LEED v5 is built to accelerate measurable outcomes for climate and human health, and we can only do that when the market has clear, credible pathways for selecting better products,” said Sarah Zaleski, Chief Products Officer, USGBC. “Alignment with ANSI/BIFMA e3 and LEVEL strengthens the credibility of product claims and supports more consistent evaluation across key impact areas such as human health to circular economy outcomes. Collaborations like these are how we turn shared priorities into accountable progress in buildings.”

Leveraging this alignment, BIFMA, USGBC and IWBI will continue collaborating on education, resources and communications to support leadership in sustainable, healthy buildings and interiors.

BIFMA Updates to the Furniture Surfaces Guideline (BIFMA G8.1-2026)

Grand Rapids, MI – BIFMA International today announced the publication of BIFMA G8.1-2026, Furniture Surfaces: Design and Durability for Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting Guideline (February 20, 2026).

The updated guideline builds on BIFMA HCF 8.1-2019, Health Care Furniture Design Guidelines for Cleanability, and expands guidance to reflect how furniture surfaces are cleaned, sanitized, and disinfected across today's environments.

BIFMA G8.1-2026 is a voluntary guideline. The document is intended to help manufacturers, specifiers, and end users understand and evaluate how furniture surfaces perform when exposed to commonly used cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting (CSD) products.

The guideline defines protocols and acceptance criteria for resistance to CSD products on furniture surfaces used in both healthcare and commercial (non-healthcare) settings. It is not intended to establish health or safety-based claims; users should select requirements and test agents appropriate to their environment and risk management practices.

Key updates in the 2026 edition include:

Expanded scope beyond healthcare to explicitly address commercial (non-healthcare) settings in addition to healthcare environments.

A tiered approach with separate conformance statements for healthcare and commercial applications.

Expanded annex and appendix resources, including ACT test method content, additional design recommendations, and added information related to ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) and other supplemental topics.

Acknowledgement of emerging 'touchless' disinfection approaches (e.g., UVC, fogging, electrostatic spray) alongside the primary focus on chemical cleaning and disinfection.

This update reflects a substantial, multi-year collaborative effort. Over the past four years, a committee of BIFMA members and nonmembers worked to refine the guidance, incorporate stakeholder input, and expand the document to better serve a wider set of market needs. BIFMA is grateful to all participants and contributors for their time, expertise, and commitment to improving the furniture surface guidance.

BIFMA members ae eligible for a complimentary madcad.com subscription to access all BIFMA standards. To learn more about membership, visit the website bifma.org.

About BIFMA

BIFMA is the leading non-profit furniture trade association in North America with members from around the world.
BIFMA Ultimate Test for Fit for Furniture Dimensions and Adjustment Ranges

The Ultimate Test for Fit (UTFF) is now available as a companion tool to the newly published ANSI/BIFMA X10.1-2024 Ergonomics Requirements for Furniture Designed for Computer Use. Developed using the ergonomics principles of ISO 9241-5, the UTFF enables
organizations to evaluate how well existing or new furniture solutions fit individual users—without the need for physical measurements.

The X10.1-2024 standard specifies work chair and worksurface dimensions based on anthropometric data spanning from the 5th percentile female to the 95th percentile male (and, in some cases, female). Products designed to meet these requirements will accommodate
    a wide range of users.

However, in any workplace, some individuals may fall outside these reference dimensions. While many will still be able to use products designed to X10.1-2024 comfortably, others may require solutions with different dimensions to achieve an optimal fit.
The Ultimate Test for Fit provides clear, actionable criteria to help organizations determine whether each individual user has been properly accommodated—supporting more inclusive and ergonomically sound work environments.

BIFMA Tariff Position Statement

Grand Rapids, MI – BIFMA, the unified voice of the commercial furniture industry since 1973, represents 175 business and institutional furniture manufacturers, and material/component part suppliers across North America with the majority of members based
in the US, with an additional 78 international member companies around the world.

The association continues to endorse the concept of free trade recognizing its crucial role in fostering robust supply chains and efficient production across all member nations as the industry is very much integrated to remain competitive globally.

Specific to North America, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA in 2020, further solidified North American trade relationships. We caution against any drastic tariff implementations that could undermine the progress
    made under USMCA.

Commercial furniture manufacturing in the United States is conducted in 48 states, contributing nearly $15 billion annually to the US economy and generating significant annual exports of $1.75 billion dollars each year.

Over 65,000 U.S. workers are employed in this sector across more than 1,400 commercial furniture establishments (with nearly $3 billion in payroll annually). Thousands of jobs in the US are tied to furniture exports are at risk due to potential tariff
        increases.

The furniture industry faces significant economic and supply chain challenges with potential tariffs targeting imports from Mexico, Canada, China, and other nations. The proposed tariffs threaten to disrupt well-established trade relationships and
supply chains developed within North America creating further disadvantage to US companies against competitors located outside of North America.

Economic Impact

Furniture prices and material costs across both mass-produced and high-end market segments will increase, potentially raising prices for consumers by amounts proportional to the tariff rates. Such increases will have a negative impact on market demand
likely leading to a net job loss particularly challenging for the furniture industry, which is already navigating post-pandemic market conditions. Ripple effects could impact customer industries and adjacent construction industries as new capital
        investment projects may be reconsidered.

Supply Chain Considerations

Recent investments in North American reshoring efforts would be undermined. Many furniture manufacturers have strategically developed hybrid production models and supply chains within Mexico and Canada and other countries. New tariffs could force
costly and disruptive restructuring of these networks, potentially reversing the benefits gained from recent reshoring efforts.

Competition

International competitors who source component parts from tariffed countries would not be impacted by price increases from tariffs like U.S. manufacturers would. Thus, when they export finished goods to the U.S., their cost basis would be more competitive
than domestic U.S. manufacturers. This, coupled with the strong U.S. dollar, would put domestic manufacturers in a very disadvantageous position in the U.S. market.

Industry Perspective

While some domestic furniture manufacturers may see an opportunity for increased domestic production, most are concerned that tariffs could have substantial negative effects on the furniture industry and consumers creating more economic instability
than benefit. Manufacturers must remain competitive in the US , North American, and International Marketplaces to achieve long term success. Taxing goods and materials coming into the United States will carry unintended consequences in today’s
globally interconnected manufacturing process. One example is worsening the existing tight labor market for skilled manufacturing workers.

In conclusion, BIFMA and its members encourage the Administration to reconsider imposing new tariffs. BIFMA advocates for trade policies that maintain the strengths of our North American partnerships while addressing contemporary challenges. We urge
policymakers to carefully weigh the potential consequences of aggressive tariff policies. We invite policymakers to engage in constructive dialogue with industry stakeholders to find balanced solutions that support domestic manufacturing without
sacrificing the benefits of regional trade integration helping US manufacturers to be the most competitive region globally.
