Grand Rapids, Mich.– The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association is showcasing the work of Pratt Institute Industrial Design student, Sam Cotton, in the BIFMA NeoCon Booth # 7-10046.

“We are proud of our collaboration with the Furniture Studio at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. We have been providing our standards and guidelines to students as part of their education and we’re delighted to feature some of the student work” says Executive Director Tom Reardon of BIFMA. “We understand that this next wave of designers will create new applications and products that will affect commercial design. We want to communicate how engineering, health, safety, sustainability, and performance standards affect products and their success in the market”.

BIFMA standards are used throughout commercial product manufacturing across the world. And as part of the association’s outreach, BIFMA has begun working with design schools to create a greater awareness of the value of standards so that product performance is built into the design process.

Pratt Institute Professor and Furniture Design Studio Coordinator, Kate Hixon commented, “Our students are constantly pushing the bounds of creativity and design. BIFMA standards give the designer context to develop concepts into products that can be mass-produced and have lasting value for end users.
