ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard and Tools

The ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard was developed by a "Joint Committee" of stakeholders using a consensus process described by the American National Standards Institute.

The purpose of this voluntary standard is to provide measurable market-based definitions of progressively more sustainable furniture by establishing performance criteria that address environmental and social aspects throughout the supply chain. It addresses product-based characteristics in the general areas of materials, energy usage, human and ecosystem health, and social responsibility impacts. The standard was designed to allow for multiple levels of achievement and to provide an open alternative to proprietary protocols.

ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard Tools

BIFMA offers e3 implementation support tools for the e3 Standards:

  1. Guidance Manual (includes the e3 Standard)
Similar to a LEED Reference Guide, the Guidance Manual provides helpful suggestions, potential strategies, references, resources and other guidance information that can assist a manufacturer toward specific credit compliance.  Member price - $300 - Non/Member price - $600 - order here.
  2. TRACI Look-Up Tool (applies to Section 7 of e3)
An Excel file useful for pursuing credits in section 7 of the standard. The TRACI Chemical Impact Look up tool provides a quick way to check if a chemical is listed in e3 Annex B and/or USEPA’s Tool for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemical and other Environmental Impacts (TRACI) 2012 dataset. Also included is a sortable, Excel version of Annex B. Several credits in Section 7, Human & Ecosystem Health reference the Annex B Chemicals of Concern list, and a sortable version will assist with grouping chemicals by end-point classification.  Member price - $100 - Non/Member price - $200 - order here.
